Freshwater's Homes, and What Their Drains Need
Locals call it Freshie, an iconic Northern Beaches surf suburb formerly named Harbord, and the birthplace of Australian surfboard riding via Duke Kahanamoku's 1914 demonstration.
In the 1930s Warringah Council declared that only brick houses could be built here, and a lot of that solid pre-war brick stock still stands today.
Later decades layered apartment blocks over the top, so more than half the dwellings now are flats, with separate houses making up most of the rest.
That headland setting drives the drainage story. Homes on the slopes running down toward The Strand and Soldiers Avenue face real gravity and drainage challenges on the steeper blocks, and stormwater picks up speed fast once it starts moving.
